How much wallpaper do I need? From measuring walls to hanging wallpaper: here's how to do it.
Choosing a beautiful wallpaper is often the most enjoyable part. But then come the practical questions. How do you properly measure a wall? How much wallpaper do you need? Which design works well in a small space? And how do you choose wallpaper that truly fits your interior?
At Days of Bloom, we help customers with this almost daily. That's why we're sharing some frequently asked questions and useful tips below to help you get started with confidence.
How do you properly measure a wall for wallpaper?
Always start by measuring the full width and height of the wall you want to wallpaper.
Width × height = total m² of wallpaper
We advise always keeping at least a 10 cm extra margin in both height and width. In practice, walls often turn out not to be perfectly straight. With a little extra margin, you prevent running short during wallpapering.
Do you have a sloped wall? Then always measure the highest point of the wall and the full width.
Also include windows, doors, and other openings in the total dimensions of the wall. These parts will be easily cut out during wallpapering.
The leftover wallpaper can often be beautifully used for creative applications in the house. For example, wallpapering a niche or the inside of a cabinet or door.
Are you unsure about the measurements? Feel free to send us a photo or sketch of your wall. We're happy to help you think it through.
What is the difference between custom wallpaper and wallpaper on a roll?
With custom wallpaper, the design is specially tailored to your wall, and you order exactly the dimensions you need, including the extra margin.
This means the design is beautifully distributed across the wall, and the strips fit together perfectly. That's why it's important to measure well beforehand. With custom wallpaper, it's difficult to order an extra strip later. Color differences can arise between different productions, and the pattern often no longer aligns perfectly.
With wallpaper on a roll, in addition to the height and width of your wall, you also need to consider the pattern repeat. Due to the pattern repeat, extra length may be needed per strip so that the design aligns beautifully. This means you sometimes need more rolls than when you only look at the number of m².
How much wallpaper do I need?
How much wallpaper you need depends on:
- the dimensions of your wall
- the design
- the pattern repeat of the print
- the choice between custom wallpaper or wallpaper on a roll
Which wallpaper works well in a small space?
Many people think that a small space should only remain calm or white. But wallpaper can add an enormous amount of warmth, atmosphere, and character.
A smaller space doesn't have to be boring or colorless at all. Often, a soft design in natural tones actually creates a very atmospheric and spacious feeling.
Especially in smaller spaces, wallpaper can add a lot of atmosphere and depth. Think, for example, of a hallway, toilet, niche, or a cozy bedroom corner.
Our advice:
- choose colors that radiate warmth
- work with natural tones and soft contrasts
- incorporate colors into accessories or furniture
- choose a design that brings calm without feeling flat
A space with atmosphere often feels more pleasant and calmer.
How do you apply wallpaper?
Many people think that wallpapering is complicated, while non-woven wallpaper is actually very pleasant to work with.
You apply the adhesive directly to the wall, so the wallpaper itself doesn't need to be pasted. That's a lot easier, and you don't need a wallpapering table.
We advise you to:
- make the wall smooth, dry, and clean
- use a good non-woven wallpaper adhesive
- work calmly, strip by strip
- start on the left and continue working from left to right
With custom wallpaper, the strips align beautifully so that the design flows seamlessly.
